Welcome to the New Wave shows in Grahamstown

The New Wave Theatre Company is making waves again at the Standard Bank National Festival of Arts. We promise to confront our audience with relevant problems of the South African condition.

Friday 30 June - Saterday 8 July 2000

Dick Talk Dick Talk is a sexy show, not for the faint-hearted. It deals with both sexes’ view on the penis. A show that will make you sick from laughter; cry with empathy. But, most of all, it will titilate all the senses!
Other Side Of The Rainbow Judy Garland managed to avoid that compromised life, and Jo-Ann is determined to follow in her footsteps.

What do you do when you feel that flame burning inside you, but you know it won’t foot the bill? You know if you follow that flame, you might starve, and you will if you don’t.

More often than not, we have some kind of role model we would like to be like. As we travel with Jo-Anne through her career as an entertainer, she also takes us on a journey through the life of Judy Garland. To her Judy became more than just a role model, she became a friend. A friend that was always somewhere on the background through a bumpy career as a Garland impersonator and a failed actress. Judy is even present in that final moment where Jo-Anne needs to make the choice between a financially more secure, but compromised life, or to keep hoping for that ticket to the other side of the rainbow. A spectacular tribute!

Rat Trap Goerge is a man trapped in an unhappy marriage and longs to leave in pursuit of a life he has always dreamt of having; but, he is too afraid of trying anything…so all he does is dream. Layne is a mysterious character who emerges from the sewers and offers to help George without the aid of lawyers or hit men, but by escaping forever through the sewers where no one would find them. In a moment of desperation, George accepts – not without a suspicion to why Layne is helping him. Also, George starts remembering who Layne might be, and when the truth comes out that Layne is on the run from the police because of a possible murder charge for nearly killing a woman who rejected him, George realizes that running from his problems is no solution and decides to go back to his wife where he will aim for his dream life. It is then that Layne reveals why he is helping George:- in return he needs George to help him back into a society that will accept him again. But George refuses and ends up running from Layne who at first chases George, but then realizes that he is being chased by deadly sewer rats – a constant threat throughout the play. The chase results in George escaping the sewers, but Layne becoming consumed by the rats. The play is very physical and deals with man’s fears and how he struggles to overcome them
Who's Game Our two main protagonists; Jessica and Etienne, are violently in love and dangerously stubborn. Because of bad organization, they find themselves “holidaying” at the Kruger National Park, instead of the Umhlanga Sands Hotel. This, quite clearly, is a recipe for disappointment and disaster, and our demanding couple do not handle the situation with aplomb….quite the opposite actually; and the relationship comes to a catastrophic end.

You can imagine their reaction when, months later, they find themselves BACK at the Kruger Park - as grumpy as ever – with two new perky partners, and they bump into none other than…..each other!

Can our two unlikely campers bear the mental and physical pain of being together, when being apart is just too boring? Join us on this hilarious adventure exploring love, passion and violence.

Who Digs Who You’ve heard of them. You’ve seen them. You might have experienced one. Hell, your own son could be in one right now…but who really knows what goes on behind the closed doors of a student DIGS?

Discover the lives of Gaz – your typical South African oke – and his mates, who all live “harmoniously” in this place they call home. Besides Gaz, we have Charger(named after his favourite passtime, the “charging” of Castles) who is “creative”(a slob); Lindiwe, who is PC(and a bitch) and Neil, who enjoys the use of various chemical substances.

Until…Gaz, one night after too many Castles, proposes to Dora – you all Afrikaner meisie. Sooner or later, the proverbial stuff is going to hit the ceiling fan – Gaz has no intention of marrying her, but dealing with Dora and her AWB brother and an ex girlfriend who thinks he’s turned gay and an overly helpful digsmate who’s no help at all, turns out to be easier said than done.

This is an hilarious farce satirising South Africans in life and love, overturning all those stereotypes we love to hate.
